High Quality Combat Knives.
Buying Guide for: Knives for both hunting and self protection.
If you look at the majority of high priced military styled knives, the price verses the overall quality and craftsmanship can be hard to decipher. Just because a knife is expensive, doesn't mean it will mean up to the real world demands of military use. Even the brand can throw you off. Well known brands especially, can lead someone into buying a knife based on their opinion of a certain brand, only to find out their mistake later on.
Things to consider when buying military knives.
- Quality of steel used?
- Meets Current Military specs?
- Full Tang Construction?
- Breaking Strength?
- Corrosion Resistance?
- Sharpening Retention?
Take note of a few facts.
Knives supplied to US military personnel directly through the government have to meet certain standards. When a knife manufacturer bids to sell their knives to the US Military (for Example), their knives must meet highly established demands and expectations. Only those knives that can meet those specifications will be purchased and used by the defense department. Very few knife makers meet those demands.
Breaking strength and tip breaking strength for an example, are tough specifications for knife makers to meet. Only a select few manufacturers have met those demands in the last 10 years.
Corrosion Resistance and Chemical Resistance are also specs that are set high by the government. Submersion tests and salt water resistance tests are done to insure knives won't rust or become vulnerable to pitting and etching.
Temperature durability and Resistance to drops. A few more specs that very few knife makers meet. If a knife is subjected to extreme temps, will it hold up to the demands of subjected use? Let's say for an example a knife is taken to a subzero climate, will the steel used in that knife make it more brittle?
While there are only a handful of knives that current meet US Military Specs, only one has actually surpassed them.
SOG Specialty Knives have met and or surpassed the demands of our military. Along with Ka-Bar and a few others.
My demands are simple.
- Keep and hold an edge that last longer than typical.
- Thick and strong blade construction.
- No glare black coated finish.
- Be practical for both hunting and self defense.
- Full tang tip to handle butt design.
- No Slip Handle
The only knife that I firmly believe in and own myself that meets my own demands and surpasses military specs is SOG.
Here are few suggestions that I highly recommend.
These two knives are excellent military knives.
