High Quality Combat Knives.

Buying Guide for: Knives for both hunting and self protection.

If you look at the majority of high priced military styled knives, the price verses the overall quality and craftsmanship can be hard to decipher. Just because a knife is expensive, doesn't mean it will mean up to the real world demands of military use. Even the brand can throw you off. Well known brands especially, can lead someone into buying a knife based on their opinion of a certain brand, only to find out their mistake later on.

Things to consider when buying military knives.

  • Quality of steel used?
  • Meets Current Military specs?
  • Full Tang Construction?
  • Breaking Strength?
  • Corrosion Resistance?
  • Sharpening Retention?
Take note of a few facts.
Knives supplied to US military personnel directly through the government have to meet certain standards. When a knife manufacturer bids to sell their knives to the US Military (for Example), their knives must meet highly established demands and expectations. Only those knives that can meet those specifications will be purchased and used by the defense department. Very few knife makers meet those demands.

Breaking strength and tip breaking strength for an example, are tough specifications for knife makers to meet. Only a select few manufacturers have met those demands in the last 10 years.

Corrosion Resistance and Chemical Resistance are also specs that are set high by the government. Submersion tests and salt water resistance tests are done to insure knives won't rust or become vulnerable to pitting and etching.

Temperature durability and Resistance to drops. A few more specs that very few knife makers meet. If a knife is subjected to extreme temps, will it hold up to the demands of subjected use? Let's say for an example a knife is taken to a subzero climate, will the steel used in that knife make it more brittle?

While there are only a handful of knives that current meet US Military Specs, only one has actually surpassed them.

SOG Specialty Knives have met and or surpassed the demands of our military. Along with Ka-Bar and a few others.

My demands are simple.
  • Keep and hold an edge that last longer than typical.
  • Thick and strong blade construction.
  • No glare black coated finish.
  • Be practical for both hunting and self defense.
  • Full tang tip to handle butt design.
  • No Slip Handle
The only knife that I firmly believe in and own myself that meets my own demands and surpasses military specs is SOG.

Here are few suggestions that I highly recommend.

These two knives are excellent military knives.

Automatic BB Gun

Umarex Steel Storm Burst Action Airgun.

Fast, Fun and a Blast to use!

Imagine 300 rounds of BBs flying at 430 fps, in single shot or semi-auto burst action. Imagine a compact air-gun capable of shooting a built in 30 round magazine in less than 10 seconds. The Umarex Steel Storm delivers hours of fun and can be utilized for basic pest control or even small game hunting. Although I wouldn't suggest hunting with this weapon, it can be deadly on small game if you really want to get into that.

I bought this airgun for simple plunking and all around target shooting, and so far it has managed to live up to my demands. From shooting aluminum cans to destroying paper target, this gun is great for taking a boring day and turning it into a blast.

The gun is thin and sleek, with a cool mix of top and bottom picatinny rails for mounting various sights or gadgets. I took my halo sight off of my AR-15 and attached it to the steel storm for some fun for a day.

Worked great for me and my sons shooting cans off of the back porch. We enjoyed blowing away soda cans for hours without any problems. We blew through about 2000 rounds of BBs, and maybe 20 CO2s. We had a ton of fun and shot up enough cans to make a recycling plant jealous, all without any misfires or jams.

In auto mode, or 6 shot burst mode, this automatic BB gun is loud and jumps in your hand. I like the 300 reservoir and 30 round built in magazine. The double CO2 magazine is simple to use, and allows for a relatively easy swap out of used cartridges. I noticed you burn up a ton of CO2 in burst mode, but in single shot you can burn through about half of the 300 BBs before needing to change the CO2.

As far as hunting, I'm sure this gun could be used for small game like squirrels, small birds, or pest animals like rats or mice. Anything larger, I don't think it would be humane to use. Although you do get 430 FPS on a fresh full charge and on single shot, accuracy is a little off.

Umarex Steel Storm Air Pistol (Black, Medium)

I wouldn't recommend this gun for hunting basically because of the smooth bore and rather hard to aim handling. That said, if you have pest issues, taking a few shots on burst mode could be fun I guess.

Basically, the Umarex Steel Storm is a fun and cool automatic airgun. The design is rather decent and as far as blowing away targets, it packs a heck of a punch. Well worth the money for a serious boredom killer. I think this gun would be a great addition for any airgun user looking for something fun and different.

Silent Survival with Airguns

Airgun Survival Weapons with Graphic Hunting Video.

New Survival Ideas for your Bug Out Bag & Airgun Hunting Video.

Hunting Tools: Quiet Kills on Small Game.

Hunting for food in a situation where you do not want attention from loud ammunition most commonly used in small game hunting takes some skill.

Pellet Air-Rifles make for an excellent highly accurate hunting tool. Capable of taking down small game from an average short 30yrd distance to 100 yards plus, depending on caliber, power and accuracy. Best of all, for the most part airguns are quieter and more powerful than they were 5 years ago.

Silent but Deadly
Hunting silently with an Air Powered rifle doesn't mean complete silence. Some airguns make for loud shots and can be as loud as a .22 cal Rifle, this also depends on the ammunition. Lead pellets and Tungsten hybrids are both good for hunting, but in my book, lead still packs the bag limit faster than tungsten.

Tungsten can drive into a target easily, but doesn't offer the same heavier weight and deep destruction on impact. Although I don't turn my nose up at any form of ammo and I do use the Hybrids for both target practice and hunting. I just prefer a heavier round and impact.

Gamo .22 cal Rocket Lead Pellets with a Hardened Steel Tip with a good but lower weight of 14.3gr are excellent small game ammunition. I would suggest anything rabbit in size, upwards to small wild pigs. Behind the ear kills or head shots can easily kill these animals.

.177 cal is an excellent multipurpose ammo. The fact is any high powered air gun with the right ammunition is capable of killing almost anything with the right shot. Demonstrated below in this graphic hunting video, a 180-200# Wild Hog is dropped with a .177 cal round. The shot placement, directly into the skull.

Special Metal (Tungsten) Pellets -vs- Lead

PBA Rounds are special ballistic ammo that can penetrate much deeper than lead. Accurate and destructive, PBA rounds are deadly effective. The best ammo in my opinion really depends on the shooting preferences and skill of the shooter. Just as I prefer lead rounds with steel tips, someone else might like Hybrid Tungsten ammo. I like having a steel tip on my lead, which gives me the penetration of ballistics like PBA, but with the punch and mushrooming of heavier lead.

Now with the world being so uncertain, and with people stocking up on survival gear, I am making this suggestion. Air Powered weapons that don't use C02 will be handy and effective at putting a meal on the table. The ability to remain quiet and deadly, with cheap ammunition, is an added bonus in survival.

Best Airguns for Survival

There are hundreds of Air Rifles available today that have the power to do the job of hunting small query to very large query. A good set of skills and proper weaponry can put food on the table much better than you might think.

While there are air powered weapons that can shoot .45 cal or even .357 cal slugs, the mainstream user is using .177 - .22 - .25 cal air powered pellets.

As shown in this next video, the hunter shooting the pig is using a .45 Slug with a very high powered air rifle. The weapon is deadly, but how effective at longer distances? And there is a reason why the sound is off. High powered lead throwers like this are clumsy and loud, but deadly. The only thing I can say is, a much quieter .177 pellet rifle can kill the same sized animal, of course with the right shot placement.

A .45 cal Air rifle for survival would wear you out carrying it around and is much louder. That aside it would however constitute for a higher measure of protection at close range. Granted you would need an air pressure source to regenerate the main air cylinder and would have to lug around 400 gr Ammo.

Airguns Best Packed in Your Bug Out Survival Bag

Bug out bags are everywhere, people buy prepackaged Survival gear bags, then hide them in the back of the closet. Essentially a good bug out bag should have something packed away that can let you hunt for food. Using a stick with a knife bound to the end is primitive and effective, but not going to consistently get enough food for anyone to really live off of.

So hunting with a really accurate and effective weapon is really what you need. Crossbows and Arrow munition can be effective, but the arrows are a costly loss in the field. While ammo for airguns can be stocked up in the thousands of rounds, pellets are not exactly the cheapest depending on type. For the most part though, a simple grade of lead pellets can be highly effective and a dependable source of low priced ammo.

These are my recommended Survival Airguns.

Air Powered | Hunting with Air Guns

Hunting with Air Power

Q:Can you hunt with Airguns? A=Yes, but you always check local hunting laws and regulations for game hunting.

Hunting with air power takes a certain amount of skill and accuracy. Depending on the choice of ammunition and power of the weapon being used, air-gun hunting becomes a lethal combination of stalking and weapon knowledge.

Understanding your own skill set and the power of your weapon in the hunting field, greatly increases the size of game you can hunt. If you are just starting out, start out with small game. If you are an experienced air gun hunter, you know well enough the shots you can make, thus your lethal enough to take on larger classed game, like wild pig and deer.

Although .177 cal is the smallest pellet size, a well placed shot can make all the difference. While higher caliber weapons are available and range from the .22 cal all the way to .50 cal, the smart hunter knows what suits him or her the best.

HOG HUNTING WITH AIR RIFLES.

HUNTING RABBIT WITH AIR RIFLES.

Many of my hunting buddies give me a hard time with my choice of weaponry. Using an air rifle is in my opinion the cheapest and most reliable hunting system around. Ammo is cheaper and the quietness of the hunt drives one to become as stealthy as possible. In the end, you become a better hunter. Skills are grown by the challenge and overall you become more accurate and your shots are more dependable.

Choosing the right Airgun & Ammo for your Hunting Needs.

Let's say you are looking to hunt bigger game, wild hogs and deer deserve a caliber and ammo best suited for the type of shots you'll be making. While some people swear by .177 cal as the most well rounded hunting caliber, others stipulate using higher calibers.

While just like regular guns, the type of ammo and power is what really matters. Most people don't go hunting deer with a .22 cal live round rifle, and choosing to use .177 caliber means using more skill and a better shot placement.

Some pellet ammo are more proficient for small game, while others can be used for bigger game. With different ballistics for ammo in the marketplace, finding the right ammo can be difficult. So lets look at .177 caliber ammo for a .177 caliber rifle.

Small Game .177 cal. Ammo: Lets assume you have good accuracy and know your gun well enough to make well placed shots into the head of rabbits and other small game. You would want to use a heavier, more devastating round.

Lead rounds, like the Gamo Rocket .177 Cal, 9.6 Grains, Ballistic Tip, 150ct does make decent kills on small to medium sized game. The heavier 9.6 grains delivers a stunning effect and drives deep with tremendous damage. The heavier the pellets the slower it should fly through the air, but with the right rifle, the 9.6 grains can move at 900-1200+ fps.

Ballistic Alloys, or PBA ammo like the New Raptor Performance Ballistic Alloy, the first non-lead ballistic Alloy Airgun Ammunition that increases terminal velocity up to 25%-30% over regular lead rounds, while still maintaining that “superior match grade” dead-on accuracy is available for larger game.

Designed by GAMO primarily as a hunting pellet, the new P.B.A.™ enables high powered airguns that shoot @1000 f.p.s. to shoot up to and beyond 1200 f.p.s., with tremendous devastating penetration. The fact is, the ammunition is 51% harder than lead and that causes penetration to be greatly enhanced, by up to 100%+. At 5.4 Grains, it is much lighter than traditional lead, but demonstrates lethal kill accuracy on larger game.

Gamo Raptor P.B.A. tests have shown that the ballistic holds it's stability at super-sonic speeds and hits their targets with up to 90% weight retention. The video below shows how PBA ammo can drop a 200 pound pig with the right shot.
